2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Edgewood Academy completed the 2015 season with a 13-0 record. Last year Edgewood Academy captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class AA playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Edgewood Academy Wildcats claimed the AISA-AA State Championship by defeating Marengo Academy 40-34 in Troy. Over the past two seasons the Wildcats have gone 26-0 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Edgewood Academy has gone a combined 79-2. Their 98.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class AAA over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Edgewood Academy has managed to compile a record of 179-108. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class AAA and 9th in the AISA. Their last losing season was 2007. Bobby Carr stepped down as the football and baseball coach at Edgewood Academy after building an almost unbeatable program at the school. In fifteen seasons his teams won 162 games and seven football state championships in the AISA. His leaves as the Wildcats are in the midst of a 71 games winning streak on the football field and have won the past five titles in a row. Carr also led the baseball team to eight straight championships. Eric Folmar will take over for Bobby Carr at Edgewood Academy in 2016. A graduate of Edgewood in 2003, Folmar played baseball for Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. In 2005 he joined the Marines, serving his country for four years. In 2009 he returned to pursue a degree in Sports Management at Faulkner University where he worked as a graduate assistant. Later he was hired full time as a coach for the linebackers. During this same time he also worked as an assistant football coach at Edgewood Academy with the football and baseball teams. In 2014 after receiving his degree, he accepted a position of head coach with the Southwest Georgia Academy for two seasons. The Edgewood Academy Wildcats will play in Class AAA region one during the 2016 season. The Wildcats move up in classification to Class AAA. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. Edgewood Academy will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. Region one will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Wildcats enter the 2016 season riding a 71 game winning streak. They have also won 53 consecutive regular season games. Edgewood Academy has won 30 consecutive region games. They have won 37 straight games on their home turf at Edgewood Stadium. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Edgewood Academy has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Wildcats enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one of the favorites not only in their region but to play in the AISA title game in November. The Wildcats have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2007 and this year should be no exception. Edgewood will try to extend their 71 games winning streak against Mississippi powerhouse Jackson Prep to open the season. They will also be without longtime head coach Bobby Carr. The Wildcats have not lost a regular-season game since falling to Glenwood 13-12 in October 2010. The Wildcats open the 2016 season on a neutral field against non-region opponent Jackson Prep MS on Saturday, August 13 at Cramton Bowl. This will be the first meeting between Edgewood Academy and Jackson Prep MS on the football field. Edgewood Academy returns AISA All-State Senior receiver Jackson Tate. He was named to the first team last season. The Wildcats also return Junior linebacker Khalid Young. He was named to the first team. The Wildcats also return Senior receiver Maurice Young. He was named to the second team. The Wildcats also return Senior offensive lineman Tyler Anderson.
